Paul Rowan winning the RUN ARMAGH 10KRun Armagh 10K - 2010 Race Report
20-Apr-2010

The second annual RUN ARMAGH 10K road race event was held around the streets of Armagh on Sunday, 18th April.

Paul Rowan scored a magnificent victory in a race that attracted almost 600 entrants.

Paul, who finished 5th in Titanic Quarter 10K in previous weekend, was in fine form finishing a full 30 seconds ahead of his nearest rival in an impressive 32 minutes 28 seconds - setting a new course record by 13 seconds. Rowan, of Willowfield Harriers, always looked to be the class of the field as he lead from the gun after the 2PM start. He set the pace in the first half, leading by 4 seconds at the split, but raced away from the leading pack with a blistering second half of 15 minutes 57 seconds.

Conditions on the day were ideal for runners - overcast and mild, offering clear views of the Armagh countryside as runners passed through the rural sections of the course. Eamon White (North Belfast Harriers) once again finishing in 2nd place, as he did in 2009 (taking 35s off his time in the process) with Brian Thursby-Techam & Michael Black (both of Letterkenny A.C.) coming home in third and fourth positions. Rory Loughran (Canal Court Runners), Desi Foley (Sligo A.C.) and Jonny Gregg (Newry City Runners) completed the top seven in the mens race.

Catriona McCorkell winning the RUN ARMAGH 10KCatriona McCorkell (Lagan Valley) came home to finish 1st in the Ladies race in a time of 39 minutes 04 seconds, and successfully defended her title. She finished ahead of Donna Evans (Monaghon Pheonix, 3rd last year) by 32 seconds. Diane Watson, Teresa Fearon and Fionnuala Duffy made up the ladies top five.

Stephen Reaney was first in the M45 category, Jimmy Renfrew of Enniskillen Running Club lead the M50 category with Armagh local runner Jimmy Gillespie (Armagh AC) taking the M55 win. Teresa Fearon (4th female) lead the and Sheila Boyle won the F45 and F50 awards respectively.

The event organisors would like to thank all the supporters and volunteers from the local Armagh community for coming down to support the runners, joggers and walkers on the Mall East, and those who lined the course cheering, clapping and handing out wedges of orange! The event sponsors were instrumental in making the event a huge success - these include Emersons supermarket from Armagh and The Classic Mineral Water Company from Lurgan. The event has raised vital funds for the nominated charity, Cardiac Rick in the Young (C-R-Y) for their screening unit in University of Ulster at Jordanstown, which screens young athletes for heart defects - saving young lives!

The official times are now avaiable via the Run Armagh website with full search functionality and category positions. A photo gallery provided by RHG Photogrpahy is also available via the Run Armagh website.
